unæthered
The æ monogram inside a dark eclipse, its rim catching a single star of light.

unæthered

somewhere between synthetic and real.

unæthered is a creative practice without borders. I make images, ComfyUI workflows, LoRAs and the occasional essay, all from somewhere between synthetic and real. The models do a lot of the work; the choosing is still mine.

i · the name

un + æther

un, as in untethered: not tied to one medium, one tool or one way of working.

æther, the old word for the stuff that was meant to fill the space between things, the medium light was supposed to travel through. There turned out to be no such thing. It was wrong in a way I have always liked.

The æ is a ligature: two letters that sat close enough, for long enough, to grow into one. It seemed like the right letter for work that is half one thing and half another.

iii · the verbs

five words the work keeps returning to.

  1. create

start from a sentence and see what answers.

  2. explore

go past the first good result. it is rarely the one.

  3. unravel

take the workflow apart until it makes sense, then show how.

  4. iterate

same seed, one word different. again.

  5. remain

keep a human hand in it, and keep showing up.

iv · also kept here

A quieter studio lives alongside this one, called SoftUnlace.

v · colophon

how this site was made.

built with
Astro, Svelte and GSAP, with a little p5.js.
set in
Cormorant Garamond, and Inter for the small print.
images
generated in the house style, then chosen, cropped and kept.
the sampler
the one on the homepage is a toy, not a model. it blurs and un-blurs pictures that already exist; nothing is generated in your browser.

vi · stay in orbit

a letter, now and then.

when something new is finished, and not much more often than that.
